Garage Design

The Deck, Fence and Garage modules are very similar in their approach to the design process. After starting Lumber Package and loading the Garage module you will see the following screen. To create a New design you would then click on the Garage design button.

Garage Screen Shot

Customer Information

The next screen prompts for an Existing Customer or a New Customer for this design. By clicking on the Existing Customer button the Customer Information panel will load with the Customer Information already loaded. If the design is for a New Customer the panel will be blank. You would then fill in the necessary information.

Garage Screen Shot

Garage Type

The first decision you would need to make is to determine the Type of Garage you would like for the design. Hip and Gable are the most common but we even offer an option to have No Roof in a design should you wish it.

Garage Screen Shot

Roof Options

If a Roof Type was selected you need to set the different options available for the Roof such as Eave overhang, the direction of the Ridge, etc.

Garage Screen Shot

Garage Size

Once you have set your Roof Options you would next set Size of the Garage. As with the other modules you can either use the rulers or manually enter the Dimensions.

Garage Walls

Once the Size has been determined there are a number of options available for the Walls. You can set the Wall Thickness and Height or use Precut Studs. You can also set the Height of the Foundation if your Design is to include one. When complete clicking on the Finish button will move you to the next set of options.

Garage Screen Shot

Opening Options

This screen gives you the Opening options. Here you can add Single or Double Overhead Doors, Windows and Service Doors. If you have added an opening and no longer require it you have the option to remove it. This menu is also available if Revising a completed Design. For this example a Single Overhead Door will be added. To do this you would click on the Garage Door button.

Garage Screen Shot

Adding An Opening

When adding an Opening you would first select the Wall to place it on. A small green arrow will appear on each wall. Clicking on the arrow identifies the Wall to be used.

Garage Screen Shot

Adding Doors & Windows

One of the options available for Openings is to select a Door or Window from a predefined list (which you create) or just entering a Rough Opening. For this example an 8x7 Overhead Door will be selected from the list. The Door and Window list contains information such as the Height and Width and wil automatically add the selected Door to the Bill of Materials. The list of Doors and Windows can be as large as you like.

Garage Screen Shot

Header Size

Once the Type of Door has been choosen you would need to select the Header Size and Quantity as well as the number of King and Jack studs to be used for the Door Opening.

Garage Screen Shot

Openings Placement

Now that you have all the Opening information all you need to do is locate it on the Wall. There is a blue screen at the top of the design which contains the dimensions (from wall to wall) of the Openings current position to aid in the placement.

Garage Screen Shot

Structural Information

Once all the Openings have been added to your Design you would click on the Build button. You would then set the necessary Stuctural information such as using Trusses or Rafters for the Roof, Ridge Size (if applicable), Rafter Sizes (if applicaple), Stud Spacing, Sub-Fascia Size, etc. Once you have made all the necessary changes and click on the OK button the program will draw the Design and give you a framed drawing.

Garage Screen Shot

Completion

The Design is complete. As with the other modules you now have several options to choose from. Lets see what Materials are necessary for this particular Design. Clicking on the Review Materials button will bring up the Material options window.

Garage Screen Shot

Customizable Options

The options you see displayed are controlled by you and are customized through the Material Control file. You can add as many options as you like. Some of the material generated may always be generated for every Design (ie: the type of nails to be used for the framing) therefore is not necessary as an option while other material may have 3 or more choices to choose from(ie: Sheathing and Siding choices). It's strictly up to you what you want shown and what you want generated.

Bill of Materials - Reports

There are 3 Reports generated for the Bill of Materials. The first Report contains the Lumber required for the design. The next Report contains all the other Components required (ie: Nails, screws, cement, etc) and the Last Report shows the Wood Types used for the various area of the Garage as well as the price for the Materials. The Lumber Bill of Materials shows the Lumber Component, it's Sku# (Product#), quantity required, size and Wood Material.

Garage Screen Shot

Component Bill Of Materials

The Component Bill of Materials displays the Sku# (Product #), a Description and the quantity required. For the Components you can add New Components, delete existing Components or modify the quantity of existing Components to the Bill of Materials. You will also notice in this example that the Truss details are printed in this Report.

Garage Screen Shot

Last Minute Changes

You can modify the Design at any time (while the Design is loaded or reload a Saved Design). For this example lets change the Roof Trusses to Rafters. Clicking on the Revise button gives us the option to modify the Design (ie: add or remove Openings) our the Structural Materials used (ie: changing from Trusses to Rafters).

Garage Screen Shot

Roof Structure Changes

Changing the Roof Structure to use Rafters is as simple as selecting the Rafter option. Once you click on the OK button you need to select the various Rafter Size options (ie: Hip Rafter Size) then the Design is redrawn. Compare this example with the one just above. Notice the change in the Roof Framing?

Print & View Options

Now lets take a look at the other Reports available for this Design, a Report can either be Printed or Viewed on screen. You have the ability to view the Design from different angles, look at how each Wall is laid out in the Spacing Chart and Cut List and a general layout is available in the Plan View. We will look at some Cut List examples and the Plan View

Garage Screen Shot

The Cut List

The Cut List shows the Lumber lengths and quantities for each wall. If an Opening is present (as in this example) the Headers and support studs are also shown. There is also a Cut List for a Gable End and a Rafter Angle Cut option which are aslo shown.

Rafter Cutting Information

Cut List - Rafter Cutting Information. If you are using Rafters in your design this page will show the Cutting details for the Rafters. As with other pages you can zoom in on an area for greater detail.
